The role of the dentist has got extended to be successful. In today’s competitive world where only the best survive, the demands on the dentist have changed from being a problem-solver to a care provider. Success comes only to those dentists who are willing to extend their role beyond from being a doctor to become an understanding and talented friend. A friend, who tries to understand your unstated needs and makes you more comfortable to handle the stress of pain.
Unfortunately, people visit a dentist only after there is pain. Pain is an advanced stage of the problem. The problem which would have given early signals but the patient overlooked. The pain, once it starts, can cause a lot of discomfort. The real issue is that the pain is lower when the patient does not talk. He wants to talk and talk a lot. The problem for the dentist is that everything he tries seems to add to the pain – some real and some imagined. Unfortunately, there is a thin line of difference between the two, forcing the dentist to only become an understanding and careful executor. Today’s patients don’t call a good executioner of dentistry as the best but are more likely to call a good listener, who is also a dentist, as the best dentist. The dentist has to hold his negative opinions and accept all the patient’s remarks. A good dentist will, however, act only on the likely condition. The ‘likely condition’ forms in his head after he filters all the imaginary issues mentioned by the patient.
The Initial Steps
The pain comes after the damage has reached the nerves, and the patient needs endodontic therapy. The issue usually is that while one portion the nerves are touched, in other zones the cap is affected. These are future possible trouble points which the dentist has to act on. The endodontic therapy is the most common solution for the pain on the nerves. Then the actions on neighbouring regions for future pain prevention.
The Practical Solutions
The teeth have a strong cap which as long as is complete and intact prevents all degradation issues. Their removal by decay, attrition or physical damage paves a route for the problems. The capacity of the interiors to avoid further decay is much lower. The most popular task taken up by the dentists is to replace/repair the damaged cap with man-made caps either in metal (gold, silver …) or inert molecules. This task is further complicated as it pains as soon as the dentist touches or reaches the damaged portion. One big change in dentistry happened is the use of Novocain (a local anaesthesia) which changed the way the task is performed. This has allowed the dentist to be more elaborate in the removal/repair process. Earlier, the patient’s pain used to make him hurry up and compromise in the quality of task. Nowadays, as the pain is not there to expedite the dentist, he can do a more elaborate and thorough job. The focus for him in modern times is to ensure prevention of recurrence and a permanent repair. Earlier, the pressure on dentist for quality was marred by the patients, prodding to stop due to severe pain caused by the procedures.
The next important steps to prevent future problems are training in oral hygiene.
Toothbrushes shape has slowly evolved to meet the new study results and nowadays they have a better capacity to reach the farthest molars. Only better training of the patient can reduce the further instances. It should improve the effectiveness of the dentist. Luckily, the patients are more responsive after an instance, and respond to new trainings and implement them better. The better response makes life much easier for both the patient and the dentist.
